STUDENT SUCCESS AT THEATRE EXAM

On Wednesday the 23rd April Imberhorne School’s AS Theatre Studies Groups arrived at their school nervous but excited, ready to perform in their practical assessment. The practical exam makes up 40% of the AS grade and is the result of over four months of the students’ hard work and dedication. Two plays were performed; the first was ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’ by Federico Lorca. This is a gripping tragedy set in the villages of Spain, depicting a mother and her struggle to maintain control over her daughters in a period mourning their father’s death. An all female cast of six AS students performed this play and, despite nerves, it was a roaring success. Audience members were moved as they watched the girls transform into the characters they were playing. After a short interval the second play was performed; ‘The Visit’ by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. This abstract play tells the story of Clara Zachanassian and her extreme quest for revenge and punishment. With a cast of two male and three female AS students it was also a sensational performance, with its unique style providing a strong contrast to the play it followed. Their precise timing and skilled comedy brought smiles to every face. The evening was a clear reflection of the diversity of Imberhorne’s drama department; with a showcase of tragedy and comedy complimenting each other beautifully it was clear how broad the study of theatre really is at Imberhorne. Congratulations go to Ingrid Öbo and James Watson for their expert direction, creating plays which displayed the true ability and professionalism of the students. Special thanks go to Will Perkins, lighting and sound technician, Mick Cook for contribution to props and staging and Paul Öbo for assistance with props and musical contribution. Thanks also go to everyone else who helped to make these plays the achievement they were, it was an extremely memorable evening and the actors are already looking forward to next year’s performance!
