Forty six students left East Grinstead, destined for the first ever Imberhorne trip to Iceland on Wednesday the 19th April after months of planning and anticipation. After a lunchtime flight they submerged themselves in  the Blue Lagoon,  hearing reports that you come out looking 5 years younger! The staff were optimitstic!

Day two was busier – discovering the Mid-Atlantic ridge in a blizzard, marvelling at geysers, sighting Icelandic horses, experiencing a tomato greenhouse and appreciating the beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall. All this with an unforgettable weather  display of hail, snow, sunshine and freezing gales - all in the space of 10 minutes!

The next few days were non stop with visits to Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, Skogafoss Waterfall, the Black Sand coastline and Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Students were able to walk behind it and experience the cold glacial waters. Some of  them came out looking like they had stepped out of a shower!

The penultimate day was spent in Reykjavik after stopping at the Geothermal Energy Plant, with it’s strong smell of sulphur – or rotten eggs as was declared by so many.  At this point the infamous northern lights had eluded them, so students were eager to find out if they might get a glimpse.  With no time to dwell on that , students embarked on a spot of Whale Watching, sighting a Mink Whale and multiple Dolphins in amongst a lot of ‘green gilled’ students….say no more!

Day 5 and with everyone shattered from seeing the Northern Lights at 2.30am, they packed up and headed off round the south coast to see lava fields and the bridge that reaches over the Mid-Atlantic ridge – on one side the European plate, and the other side is the American plate. Heading for the airport, everyone was a little sad to be going home. All the students had a fantastic time and the word used most often has been ‘awesome’. We will be planning another trip hopefully for 2018, so keep an eye out for the next one!
