Dabell Memorial Match 10th October 2013
On Thursday 10th October the Adam Dabell Memorial Football match was played out between the two 6th forms from Imberhorne and Sackville at East Grinstead Town FC. With Sackville having won the trophy 5 times previously, Imberhorne seemed in a determined mood to mark this special 10th anniversary of Adam Dabell's passing with victory to make it 5 wins a piece. With an expectant crowd and a great atmosphere building, the Imberhorne team set about their task in confident style as Steve Palmer forced a great save from the Sackville goalkeeper in only the fifth minute. Luckily, the fantastic Imberhorne supporters didn't have to wait long for the deadlock to be broken as Palmer again raced clear of the Sackville defence to put us 1-0 up. With the Imberhorne midfield dominating the game, the second goal was only a matter of time. This time Palmer was the provider as he cut the ball back perfectly for Myles Pitt to double our lead. With time running out in the first half, Sackville threatened the Imberhorne defence, but the impressive Bradford and our excellent debutant goalkeeper, Sam Jackson, snuffed out the danger and we went into the break 2-0 to the good. The discussion at half time was about keeping possession and waiting for the right time to play the defence splitting ball and the Imberhorne boys did not disappoint. They came out in the second half and dominated proceedings scoring 3 more to give a scoreline of 5-0 - the highest margin of victory in the 10 year history of the Memorial Cup. Palmer had made it 3-0 and then 4-0 from the penalty spot, before taking his tally to four goals on the night with a coolly taken 5th goal having rounded the keeper. Captain for the night, Palmer came off to a standing ovation with 10 minutes to play and admitted after the match that it was the perfect performance; a performance that earned him the MAN OF THE MATCH award.
